Directed by Damien Chazelle, First Man chronicles the journey of Neil Armstrong from the start of the United States space program in the 1950s to his first steps on the surface of the moon. Ryan Gosling stars as Armstrong while Buzz Aldrin is played by Corey Stoll and Michael Collins by Lukas Haas.
This is not the first time the Apollo 11 story is being brought to life on the big screen with the 1996 Apollo 11 movie being only one of many examples. The film does, however, seem to more closely examine the human cost of the Apollo 11 mission. In the newest trailer released by Universal Pictures on August 29 2018, there appears to be a brief clip of a recreation of the Apollo 1 tragedy. All three Apollo 1 astronauts were killed in a fire that swept through their capsule during a training exercise. The trailer also focuses on Armstrong’s deteriorating relationship with his son and wife at the time, Janet Shearon.
First Man was screened for the first time at the Venice Film Festival late yesterday. It received a standing ovation and was described as one of the highlights of the festival. Since its first screening, the film has received 8.5 on IMDb and a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
First Man is set to be released on October 11, 2018.
